Sporting Challenge in new Olympia Building
The sporting prowess of past and present University of 海角直播 sports teams will clash on Saturday 29 November as current students take on graduate teams at a range of sports, including basketball, hockey, rugby, and canoeing and Gaelic football. The annual Past versus Present sports tournament will take place in the University鈥檚 new 拢6m Olympia Building at Victoria Road, Middlesbrough. The building includes a sports hall the size of six badminton courts capable of staging major tournaments, squash courts and diverse research facilities including a temperature-controlled environmental chamber. Students on the University鈥檚 range of Sport and Exercise programmes will use these facilities.
The tournament rounds off the Academic Awards week and this year the Present teams are hoping to regain the Vice-Chancellor鈥檚 cup from the Past teams. Around 100 graduates will return to the university to take part in the tournament, facing stiff competition from the current students.
Sarah Buckley, the University鈥檚 Alumni Officer said: 鈥淭his great event is a real opportunity for graduates to continue their involvement with the University, plus a chance to take part in sporting events in our exciting new buildings. Maintaining relationships with graduates is key to all my alumni operations鈥.
Paula Szucs-Jones from the University鈥檚 Sports and Recreation team has been organising the competition for the past twelve years and said: 鈥淭his year鈥檚 tournament will be the biggest and best to date. The event has grown considerably over the years and now features as a key date in the diary of graduates and current students alike.鈥
The tournament is organised by the University鈥檚 Student Services department with support from the Alumni Association, Vice-Chancellor鈥檚 Executive and the University of 海角直播 Students鈥 Union.
