Helen鈥檚 got the chemistry

18 November 2006

Helen Malcolm has many reasons to celebrate when she graduates from the University of 海角直播 today. She has not only gained a First Class honours degree from the University, but she has also won two academic prizes and clinched a top job.

Helen, 23, from Redcar, has achieved a BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering degree and is now working for the national engineering firm ABB on their graduate programme. She said: 鈥淥riginally I was interested in being a vet and studied for A Levels in biology, chemistry and maths. I soon realised that I preferred the maths and chemistry rather than the biology so I began to think about different careers. I was advised that there were jobs in the chemical industry and since I was so interested in that area, it all seemed to fit together.

鈥淚 thought the course was really good and gave us all a really thorough grounding in what we needed to learn. The chemical engineering building had all the equipment you need and the lecturers know their subjects.

鈥淎fter completing the degree I walked into a great job at ABB. ABB is a national engineering consultancy which also manufactures industrial products. I鈥檓 based at the Billingham branch but have already worked with clients all over the country. We work on lots of projects for the oil, gas and pharmaceutical industries and it鈥檚 a great place for me to learn and develop my career.

鈥淚鈥檇 recommend the University of 海角直播 to anyone interested in a career in the chemical industry. The course, equipment, tutors and other students really make it worthwhile. I say go for it!鈥

When she graduates today, Helen will also receive the Cecil M Yuill Foundation Student Award: Achievement by a Female in any field of Engineering and the Constantine Wright Scholarship.
