Phil negotiates a first class degree

20 November 2007

Phil Thorpe-Willett wanted to study for a degree part-time, but didn鈥檛 want years of study. Then he heard about the University of 海角直播鈥檚 negotiated learning scheme, where previous academic study can count towards the final degree. He signed up for the scheme, and the move has proved to be highly successful. For Phil will graduate today, Tuesday 20 November, with a first class BA (Hons) Business Management.

Phil, 45, from Redcar, is a Purchasing Contracts Manager for SABIC UK Petrochemicals at Wilton. His role involves sourcing and negotiating engineering site service contracts. Phil first joined ICI aged 16 as an apprentice and will mark 30 years service with the organisation in September 2008. Phil said: 鈥業鈥檇 previously studied for a Certificate in Management and an NVQ in Purchasing and wanted to find some way of consolidating this learning into a degree. Then a friend who was studying History at the University told me about the negotiated learning scheme. This was ideal as it enabled me to do the degree over three-and-a-half years, when it would have taken longer. My previous learning was incorporated, along with modules run by the Centre for Lifelong Learning and some with the Business School.鈥

Achieving a first was a goal for Phil. He added: 鈥業鈥檓 relieved and very chuffed to get a first. I thought 鈥榠f I am going to do a degree at my age I鈥檇 like to get first class honours.鈥 I鈥檓 looking forward to my graduation ceremony and wearing the board and gown! My wife, Julie, and my Dad, Eric, will be my guests at the Town Hall.鈥
