º£½ÇÖ±²¥ ranked in Times Higher’s top 20

The University of º£½ÇÖ±²¥ is in the top 20 of a new national student survey, which ranks everything from teaching quality to social life.

The poll, commissioned by for the first time by The Times Higher Education Supplement (dated 7 December 2007), surveyed more than 22,000 full-time undergraduates across the UK. º£½ÇÖ±²¥ was the top scoring modern university in the country and joint 15th overall in the poll. In the North East, º£½ÇÖ±²¥ and Durham were joint top universities. Students at 106 higher education institutions were included in the survey. Undergraduates rated their universities and colleges of higher education on 21 diverse categories chosen by the students themselves.

The University of º£½ÇÖ±²¥ scored best for:

• high-quality facilities
• good Students’ Union
• centralised or convenient facilities
• good library and library opening hours
• ‘I would recommend my University to a friend’.

Professor Graham Henderson, University Vice-Chancellor, said: ‘I am absolutely delighted with this ranking. It is an excellent reflection of the commitment of the whole university community. It also reflects on the investment that we have made in our campus and the outstanding learning and support services that we provide for our students.’

Stephen Dowson, President of the Students' Union, added: ‘The Students' Union is thrilled with our own high rating and the excellent feedback about the University. It's a testament to the quality of services, facilities and events we provide as well as our excellent relationship with the University, their support for our work to enhance the student experience is invaluable.’

Ian Butchart, Director of Library & Information Services, said: ‘This survey builds on the previous excellent score for our library facilities in the National Student Survey. The Times Higher’s poll is further confirmation that our services are highly respected and valued by our students.’
