Radio station launched on campus

21 January 2008

Switched on University of 海角直播 students and staff can now tune into their own radio station.

University of 海角直播 Radio Network (UTRN) was launched in January, broadcasting from the School of Arts & Media鈥檚 Aurora House. It is being run for the first time on a three-month trial, with UTRN streamed live through the University鈥檚 online network which can be accessed by students and staff.

After the trial period it is hoped UTRN could eventually be rolled out and made available to everyone via the internet.

UTRN, which is primarily aimed at University of 海角直播 students, can also be heard over the airwaves in the Students鈥 Union.

Listeners can hear music and chat, with programmes broadcast 24 hours a day with presenter-led shows from 10.00am to 6.00pm. A team of 20 students and volunteers have already signed up as DJs.

Volunteers are trained to use the studio equipment and are taught broadcasting techniques. They can also gain a University Certificate in Introduction to Radio Broadcasting.

Patrick Davis, 21, of Norton, who is studying BA (Hons) Television Production Professional Practice, is among the presenting team. He said: 'It is a bit nerve-wracking going on air, but really good experience. I鈥檓 enjoying presenting and learning about the technical side too.'

Louise Alexander, 23, of Newcastle, a BA (Hons) Media Production Professional Practice student, has enjoyed learning about producing radio programmes. She said: 'This experience has been invaluable.'

Ange Ferguson, Technical Director, School of Arts & Media, said: 'It鈥檚 a new service to encourage professional development and offer added experience to students.'

Dominic Dunn, UTRN Assistant Producer, said: 'The shows look at campus life, what鈥檚 going on in the region and primarily music. There鈥檚 a news update on the hour, with half-hourly information about events on campus and at the Students鈥 Union.'

Programmes aired by UTRN are aimed at all ages with an extensive playlist, although specialist shows are being developed. There is currently a Friday afternoon show focusing on new music and emerging talent.
