08 May 2008

Richard Lambert, Director General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) was this year鈥檚 guest speaker at the 海角直播 Business School lecture.聽

He spoke to an invited audience from the region鈥檚 business community on the subject of Globalisation and Competition. He spoke about the role of globalisation in shaping the fortunes of the Tees Valley and the importance of ensuring that the UK offers an attractive fiscal and regulatory environment for international investors.聽 Mr Lambert highlighted the critical role higher level skills play in the UK鈥檚 international competitiveness.聽 He also welcomed the University鈥檚 collaboration with employers to ensure that the 海角直播 skills base is fit for the future.

Reflecting on how modern Universities operate he said: 鈥楾he way Universities interact with the economy is changing, their role is increasingly diverse.聽 Universities are ideal business partners in many ways.聽 As innovators they are very good, as they are constantly being refreshed by fresh brains and talent.聽 It鈥檚 my first visit to the University of 海角直播.聽 Looking around, it鈥檚 a place with new buildings springing up and lots happening.鈥櫬

Alastair Thomson, Dean of 海角直播 Business School said: 鈥楾he work we do at 海角直播 Business School is widely recognised in the region.聽 But it鈥檚 not every day that the Director General of the CBI comes to talk to us.聽 To have Richard Lambert here to help us relaunch the Business School and everything we stand for was a great privilege.鈥

Richard Lambert was a member of the Bank of England鈥檚 Monetary Policy Committee from spring 2003 until spring 2006, when he took up the Director-General post.

The University鈥檚 Business School also sponsored the CBI Tees Valley Dinner earlier this week, along with the Royal Bank of Scotland and One NorthEast.聽 The University itself has sponsored the forthcoming North-East Annual Dinner, taking place in the autumn.
