Coasters ask students to 'think about meningitis'
Students at the University are being urged to 鈥榯hink about meningitis鈥 during next week鈥檚 annual meningitis awareness campaign.
As part of the campaign, which runs from 13-17 October, first year students living in the University鈥檚 halls of residence will receive a 鈥榤eningitis awareness鈥 coaster which has details of the University鈥檚 meningitis web pages, NHS Direct and Meningitis Trust.
The campaign, entitled 鈥榯hink about meningitis鈥 will also feature:
- information stands on campus
- useful information on the University鈥檚 intranet
- an information session for staff who are located within halls of residence
- awareness raising with local health service providers.
Aline Marron, University Student Health Adviser, said: 鈥楽tudents fall into the 18-25-year-old age group, which is slightly more at risk. The symptoms can be similar to flu and students need to make themselves aware of the signs and look out for themselves and their friends.
鈥楨ven if they have been vaccinated against Meningitis C they are not protected against other strains such as Meningitis B, which accounts for the highest number of cases.鈥
The main symptoms of meningitis are:
- severe headache
- stiff neck - unable to put chin to chest
- high temperature
- vomiting
- joint or muscle pain
- aversion to bright lights
- drowsiness
- a rash that does not fade when a clear drinking glass is rolled on it.
