º£½ÇÖ±²¥ is the business

With just days to go until the Times Higher Education awards we have been delighted by the support and encouragement for our two shortlisted entries from business and civic leaders across the region

We have been shortlisted by the Times Higher Education magazine for the prestigious University of the Year award, along with Outstanding Employer Engagement Initiative of the Year. The University of the Year submission is based upon our unique 16-point plan to support the regional business economy through the recession, with measures including: >halving the time it takes to pay bills >bringing forward new building plans and building renovation work >working with FE colleges to provide workforce development opportunities >an outstanding business start-up support programme which led to the award of ‘Business Incubation Champion of the Year’.

Excellent industrial relations The submission also highlights our achievement in a wider context, such as our strong financial position and student growth together with excellent industrial relations and outstanding results in the National Student (satisfaction) Survey.

The Outstanding Employer Engagement Initiative award recognises university achievement in working with employers. Our entry focuses on a highly innovative Foundation Degree in Leadership and Management developed by our Business School in partnership with the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC). Aimed at junior and middle managers across the region, it includes a series of two-day masterclasses delivered by industry leaders and University staff, as well as coaching and mentoring in the workplace and on-line learning support.

Good luck messages for the finals have come from a range of regional business and civic leaders. James Ramsbotham, the NECC’s Chief Executive, said: 'We’re delighted at this national recognition for the excellent work being done at º£½ÇÖ±²¥ to enable businesses to achieve their ambitions. The determination to deliver higher education that really meets business demands is truly exceptional, and the results speak for themselves.'

Middlesbrough’s Mayor Ray Mallon, said: 'It sends a powerful message to the whole of the country that º£½ÇÖ±²¥ is open for business.' And Dragon’s Den TV star Duncan Bannatyne and entrepreneur said: 'It is very important that the University engages with business and I wish them the best of luck with the awards.'
