Stephen scores a design double

Stephen Matthewman scored a double when he graduated from the University of 海角直播. Not only did he come joint top of his course with a First Class BA (Hons) degree in Interior Architecture and Design, but he also clinched the Nature鈥檚 World Prize of 拢250, awarded for Innovation in sustainable design.

Stephen, 21, of Baglan Heights, Port Talbot, West Glamorgan, said: 鈥淚 was very pleased to get the prize, it鈥檚 helped towards clearing my overdraft!鈥 He came to the Middlesbrough-based University with an 鈥楢鈥 level in 3D studies and a GNVQ in Art & Design; both achieved at Afan College. Stephen said: 鈥淔rom the age of four I鈥檝e always been interested in drawing and design; if I was left on my own with a pencil and pad I鈥檇 start drawing away. I chose 海角直播 because my father鈥檚 family were originally from Acklam in Middlesbrough and I knew the area. The Lecturers were encouraging, and helped me to decide on my career choice.鈥

Stephen particularly enjoyed his final-year project, where he designed a restaurant, which incorporated the latest Internet technology. He said: 鈥淧eople may be able to use WAP mobile phones to order food in restaurants before they turn up, so the meal is ready on arrival. This could be the way of eating out in the future.鈥

He is now aiming for his first position with a design practice. Stephen is the son of John and Margaret Matthewman and a former pupil of Glanafan Secondary School.
