Inspiring women in the workplace

Inspirational women will aim to encourage others to ensure they achieve their full potential during two º£½ÇÖ±²¥ events marking International Women’s Day.

Prominent businesswomen will join º£½ÇÖ±²¥ staff and graduates to talk about their careers, the challenges they have faced and who has inspired them, in a special event at the University on Wednesday 6 March. And in a second event, º£½ÇÖ±²¥ honorary graduate Dr Jane Atkinson, Vice-President (Operations) at Sembcorp Utilities UK, will give a public lecture based on her meteoric rise to prominence in what has traditionally been a man’s world on Thursday 7 March.

When embarking on her career as an engineer, Dr Atkinson never imagined that within a few years she would be fighting off deadly snakes, spiders and alligators while constructing a new steelmaking plant. But that is exactly what she found herself doing while carrying out challenging work for Corus in Alabama.

Today, she is a senior executive in an expanding international energy business, driving significant investment in renewable energy on º£½ÇÖ±²¥.

Her talk, engineering - it's a jungle out there, can be heard at 6.00pm in the University’s Centuria Building, Room H0.01. To book a place contact Jane Hutchinson on 01642 738233 or email events@tees.ac.uk.

The diverse range of speakers at the March 6 event includes housing group finance director Heather Ashton, businesswoman and training provider Kay Matthews, business mentor Patricia Boynton, managing director Julia Wood and chemical engineering lecturer Sam Gooneratne.

This event, from 12.15pm to 3.30pm in the University’s Students’ Union Hub, is aimed at students and potential students, including young people at college or in their final year at school, as well as members of the public.

There will also be a range of stalls with information on careers, starting up in business, advice on health and well-being, and information relating to part-time and postgraduate study at º£½ÇÖ±²¥. For further information contact Gillian Kazeminia on 01642 738317 or email g.kazeminia@tees.ac.uk.
