Links with the University continue for James

James Farrell’s links with º£½ÇÖ±²¥ continue as the firm he now works for looks after the refrigeration and air conditioning units across campus.

Having graduated with a First Class BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (Extended), James is now working as a Contracts and Quality Manager with Aircon Refrigeration Ltd while also completing postgraduate study in Newcastle. James, from Redcar, who spent a year on industrial placement as a civil project engineer, said: 'The knowledge and skills I was able to develop during the degree have continued to be invaluable. The time spent on placements is also important in giving insight into how the industry works.

'My viewpoint on learning was elevated massively having been involved in the ‘working world’ alongside experienced professionals, many of whom were chartered engineers. It taught me the extreme importance of time management and the ability to handle many different tasks and demands at once.

'During my industrial placement I was actively involved in several projects that were delivered by the Project Engineering Office at PD Ports. I developed technical skills and many personal skills through liaising with contractors and being on site. It developed my confidence massively as I was given the responsibility of handling my own project. Returning to study after the industrial placement provided the perfect opportunity to put this experience into practice through assignments, group projects and a final year research project.'

Commenting on his current role, he said: 'As a contract manager I follow through on sales orders for the installation of air conditioning, refrigeration, heating or ventilation equipment. Contracting involves planning labour and materials, then monitoring the works whilst liaising with the client.

'I have decided to continue study in business and management with the aim of diversifying my learning in relation to non-technical aspects such as management, finance and business theory.'

He added: 'I thoroughly enjoyed my time at º£½ÇÖ±²¥ and a lot of interesting people from all corners of the world.'
