The course is made up of three sessions, which are open to anyone interested in developing comedy and performance skills, regardless of experience.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore how comedy can be used as a creative tool, develop material and learn the fundamentals of stand-up performance in a supportive environment.
There will be a special showcase event at the end of the course where participants can perform in front of friends and family.
The course is free, and funding is available to reimburse travel costs, helping to widen participation.
Dr Sedgwick said: "Comedy is a powerful art form that helps people connect, share experiences and tell stories in unique ways.
鈥淭his project aims to explore the relationship between art and comedy while encouraging more people in our region to get involved in performance and creative expression.
鈥淲e hope this course will help build confidence, support emerging talent and inspire people to discover a new creative outlet."
The comedy course is funded through an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Impact Acceleration Account project, which supports researchers to develop activities that engage with communities.
Sessions will take place at the Old Fire Station, Middlesbrough Town Hall, on 10 October, 7 November and 12 December, from 10.00am to 1.00pm.
