Local healthcare expert speaks at University
Professor Paul Johnstone, Director of Public Health with Tees Health Authority, will deliver the first free public lecture of the University of 海角直播鈥檚 2001/2002 lecture season. Entitled Tackling Inequalities: Shaking the empty tin?, Professor Johnstone鈥檚 lecture will take place in the University鈥檚 Europa Building, Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough at 6.30pm on Wednesday 7 November. Refreshments are available from 6pm.
Professor Johnstone, based at the Tees Health Authority, is also a visiting Professor at the University of 海角直播鈥檚 School of Health & Social Care. He specialises in evidence based research into the role of healthcare and medicine in public services.
鈥淢y lecture will be looking at some of the inequalities in health and the opportunity for action. It鈥檚 time to stop analysing the causes of ill health and inequalities and start acting on them鈥, said Professor Johnstone.
He added: 鈥淔or example, this region has received a great deal of Government finance to help with smoking cessation, which has resulted in a decrease in smoking amongst some groups but has not made any significant difference to other social groups. I鈥檒l be looking at why schemes such as this, which are open to all, are not being accessed by certain areas of the community and how we can encourage everyone to make the best use of these opportunities.鈥
