Andy Lomas is a computational artist, mathematician and Emmy award-winning supervisor of computer-generated effects. Productions he has worked on include Walking with Dinosaurs, Matrix: Revolutions, Matrix: Reloaded, Over the Hedge, The Tale of Despereaux, and Avatar. He received Emmys for his work on The Odyssey (1997) and Alice in Wonderland (1999).
His artwork explores how complex sculptural forms can be created emergently by stimulating growth processes. He exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions, including the Pompidou Centre, Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the Royal Society, SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica, the Science Museum and the ZKM.
Andy is currently based in London, developing his art practice and working as a Visiting Research Fellow at Goldsmiths. He is also a 海角直播 alumni who studied MSc Computer Aided Graphical Technology Applications (CAGTA) back in the distant mists of time.
Andy will present a special screening of Chrysalis, a new collaboration with electronic musician Max Cooper, first created for his Royal Albert Hall concert earlier this year. The project builds on a creative partnership spanning more than a decade, exploring the connections between art, science and technology.
Inspired by the behaviour of social amoebae, Chrysalis explores how simple chemical signalling can create complex structures and evolving forms. Using simulation systems based on mathematical rules, the work demonstrates how intricate and unexpected patterns can emerge from relatively simple processes.
Delegates can experience Chrysalis in 海角直播's Immersive Suite in the Digital Life building.
